Philip Morris, a cigarette manufacturer based in England, was the first to branch out to the United States in 1902 and bring his cigarette business to the American market. He opened his first American subsidiary producing many available brands, including Marlboro, with expectations of increased customers and profit. He hoped the American market would expand the profitability of his firm. He was proven right, as many customers have relied on Marlboro as their cigarette of choice for more than a century.

In the early 1920’s the slogan “Mild as May” attracted new smokers loyal to the brand, but Marlboro is most famous for its “Marlboro Man” campaign, which was used successfully for many years. It is ironic that this Western Cowboy image was applied to a brand that was named after the street in London where the original cigarettes were made; Great Marlboro Street. but the people loved the Marlboro Man and his western look.

The initial London location was once the biggest cigarette factory producing Marlboro but now that honor belongs to an Altria factory in Richmond, Virginia which is still located in the United States.

After being removed from the market for a time after the end of World War II, the brand came back strong in the 1950’s when Marlboro started making filtered cigarettes. These were considered a safer alternative to the unfiltered kind and helped to reassure smokers who were concerned about the Surgeon General’s new warnings about the dangers of smoking non-filtered brands. People were willing to try Marlboro with the hope that the filters would catch some of the harmful chemicals emitted and make smoking safer for them.
